WELCOME 8TH GRADE SOCIAL STUDIES STUDENTS!!!!

ACTIVITY ONE - BUILD A BRIDGE BETWEEN LANGUAGE (CULTURE) AND THE IMMIGRATION OF THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY

MATERIALS YOU NEED FOR TODAY:
~ Pencil
~ Your Learning Log (you will be watching a short video so get ready to take some notes)
~ Please get settled and get ready to answer the following questions (we will discuss your answers in 10 minutes)

1.) What are homophones?

2.) If English is not your first language, how do you think that the existence of homophones could be confusing to you? Reflect on a possible situation (in real life) that an English language learner could experience homophone confusion.

Example: I am applying for a job and my possible employer asks me if I have “read” the insurance waiver. I think he has said “red” (as in the color) and I am confused.
